Las Cruces firefighters responded to a fire at an abandoned building on the 700 block of North Mesquite Street Sunday afternoon, April 26. Crews arrived about four minutes after being dispatched and found significant flames coming from the back of the structure.
High winds made conditions dangerous as fire burned through the roof and attic. Firefighters searched the building before switching to defensive operations. The fire was brought under control within about 15 minutes of arrival, according to officials. No injuries were reported, but there was significant structural damage to both the roof and exterior wall. The cause remains under investigation.
