U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez, who serves New Mexico’s 2nd district in Congress, addressed key issues facing the nation through a series of social media posts on September 11, 2025. Vasquez discussed immigration reform, gun violence legislation, and paid tribute to the victims and heroes of September 11, 2001.
On immigration reform, Vasquez drew from personal experience growing up along the U.S.-Mexico border. In a post dated September 11, he wrote: “I grew up on both sides of the border, so I know we need leaders in Congress who are willing to meet the moment we’re in and propose immigration reform that Americans can get behind. Let’s move forward.”
Addressing gun violence later that day, Vasquez called for legislative action to protect young people. He stated on September 11: “How many wake up calls does this country need? Time’s up — we need to pass meaningful legislation to protect our young people from gun violence.”
In commemoration of the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Vasquez honored those affected by the tragedy. On September 11 he posted: “Today, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the resilience of survivors, and the courage of first responders. We stand with the families forever changed and remember the heroes who rose in the face of tragedy. May we never forget.”
Vasquez assumed office after defeating Yvette Herrell in New Mexico’s closely contested second congressional district race in 2024 by a margin of just over four percentage points (52.1% to 47.9%). He began his term representing New Mexico’s southernmost district following his victory over Herrell.
