Rep. Gabe Vasquez, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New Mexico’s 2nd district since 2023, has been vocal on social media regarding recent events in Texas and issues related to border security. Vasquez, who was born in El Paso, Texas, and currently resides in Las Cruces, expressed his concerns and actions through a series of tweets.
On July 7th, Vasquez addressed the situation in Texas with empathy for those affected by recent tragedies. He stated: “The tragic stories and images coming out of Texas are heartbreaking. To our neighbors in Texas, to the brave first responders still searching for the missing, to those grieving the passing of loved ones, and to those whose homes and communities have been devastated — our hearts”.
Later that day, he commented on the resilience shown by local individuals during difficult times while criticizing federal efforts. He tweeted: “When times are tough, Americans show up for one another. As more and more stories surface from Texas, it’s clear local heroes on the ground helped saved hundreds of lives as the waters rose. The federal government, on the other hand, failed to adequately show up for its people.”
On July 8th, Vasquez announced an endorsement from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for his proposed legislation aimed at improving conditions for detainees at border facilities. He wrote: “Securing our border does not mean detainees should have to face inhumane conditions and treatment while in custody. I am proud to announce I secured an endorsement from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for my Humane Accountability Act that will keep government agencies”.
As a graduate of New Mexico State University with a BA obtained in 2008, Rep. Gabe Vasquez continues to focus on issues impacting both his home state and broader national concerns.
