Rep. Gabe Vasquez, a U.S. Congress member representing New Mexico’s 2nd district since 2023, has been vocal about his opposition to the proposed Medicaid cuts in what he refers to as “Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.” In a series of tweets, Vasquez shares his concerns and actions regarding the bill.

On July 2, 2025, Rep. Vasquez reached out to constituents in New Mexico to understand their perspectives on how they would be affected by potential Medicaid cuts included in the proposed legislation. He shared these insights through a tweet stating: “l asked New Mexicans how they would be affected by Medicaid cuts in Trump’s Big Ugly Bill. Here’s what they said:”

Later that day, Vasquez announced via Twitter that he was live on Substack with Latino Victory US discussing his personal story and elaborating on the negative impacts of the bill on families. He invited followers to join the conversation by tweeting: “I’m live on Substack with @latinovictoryus discussing my story and the harms the Big Ugly bill will have on our families. Join us!”

On July 3, 2025, Vasquez reiterated his disapproval of the legislation through another tweet emphasizing its detrimental effects both nationally and locally for New Mexico. He pledged ongoing advocacy for his constituents with this message: “This is a terrible bill for America. This is a terrible bill for New Mexico. I’m going to keep fighting for la gente — for the people.”

Gabe Vasquez was born in El Paso, Texas in 1984 and currently resides in Las Cruces. A graduate of New Mexico State University with a BA earned in 2008, he succeeded Yvette Herrell as representative of New Mexico’s 2nd district.
