Gabe Vasquez, a current U.S. Congress member representing New Mexico’s 2nd district, has shared several updates via social media in recent days, highlighting legislative and cultural initiatives. Vasquez, born in El Paso, Texas, and a graduate of New Mexico State University, has been serving since 2023 after replacing Yvette Herrell.
On April 29, 2025, Vasquez announced the reintroduction of the M.H. Dutch Salmon Greater Gila Wild and Scenic River Act. He expressed gratitude towards the Gila Wild & Scenic Coalition, acknowledging their efforts in safeguarding the Gila River. According to Vasquez, “This bill protects our communities, our cultures, and the future of New Mexico’s last”.
The following day, Vasquez reflected on his personal connection to New Mexico’s public lands, where he spent much of his youth hiking, hunting, and fishing. He reiterated the economic importance of these areas, stating, “I know these places are central to who we are — and to the strength of our economies.”. The Congressman participated in a discussion with the Outdoor Alliance regarding significant challenges these lands face.
On May 1, 2025, Vasquez congratulated Troy Ainsworth from Organ Mountain High School in Las Cruces for winning the Congressional Art Competition for NM02. Ainsworth’s artwork, titled “Age-old Rivals,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Vasquez remarked on the importance of uplifting young artists and celebrating creativity, “Proud to uplift young artists and celebrate the creative”.
