Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the nation’s population of older adults continues to increase, while numbers in younger age brackets decline. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older saw a 13% rise, as the population under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The older adult population in the United States has seen significant growth over the past 100 years, expanding from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A study published in 2021 indicates that nearly half of the population age 65 and older—around 28 million individuals—may need long-term services and support, with projections suggesting over one-third may at some point require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
