Ninth grade Honors World History students from Las Cruces Public Schools participated in the 2026 National History Day District Competition on February 20 at Rio Grande Preparatory Institute. This event marked the district’s largest participation in the program so far. Student artwork was displayed throughout the hallways, and the gym featured presentations focused on historical figures.

The competition centered on the theme “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History.” Students presented original research projects that examined significant events from the Revolutionary Era and other periods. The entries included documentaries, exhibits, performances, websites, and research papers. Through these projects, students demonstrated their abilities in historical analysis, research, communication, and civic engagement.

“The biggest takeaway from this National History Day event was how much the students gained from doing the project,” said Dr. Wendi Miller-Tomlinson, LCPS Deputy Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. “Many of them spoke about the authenticity of the experience and how much they enjoyed learning in this way.”

Hundreds of students attended along with educators, community judges, and families to celebrate history and creativity. Students discussed their chosen time periods and engaged in conversations about key moments that influenced events and people.

Judging took place between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., followed by a recognition ceremony for educators who supported student research. Awards for standout projects will be announced next week. Top entries will move on to the regional competition in Silver City on February 24, with opportunities to advance to state and national contests.

During lunch, members of the public were invited to view student projects in the exhibit hall. Middle school students from MVLA are also set to participate in the regional competition on February 24.

Students from RGPI greeted guests and visiting freshmen while escorting judges and district leaders through each competition station. District leaders expressed interest in making this an annual tradition with plans to expand participation across more classrooms and grade levels.
