Las Cruces police have identified 21-year-old Dominic Gage Martinez as the suspect in a domestic incident that led to an officer-involved shooting on Embassy Drive Sunday afternoon.
Martinez faces a felony charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer, along with misdemeanor charges of resisting or obstructing and assault against a household member. Police responded at about 3:40 p.m. July 27 to reports that Martinez was armed and threatening to shoot someone at a residence in the 1900 block of Embassy Drive.
According to police, officers confronted Martinez at the scene. During the encounter, an officer fired at least one shot before non-lethal force was used to take Martinez into custody.
Martinez sustained injuries while being apprehended but was not shot. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-gunshot, non-life-threatening injuries and released shortly after. He is now held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
The involved officer was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure following such incidents.
The Officer-involved Incident Task Force is investigating. The task force includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, Las Cruces Police Department, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, and New Mexico State University Police.
A news conference with further details will be held by Las Cruces police at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 31. The event will be streamed live on the City’s YouTube channel and LCPD’s Facebook page.
