The Las Cruces Police Department is urging the public to remain alert and follow best practices for online safety during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October. The department highlights the importance of cybersecurity for businesses, government agencies, and individuals who use digital platforms and devices.
The federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has stated, “Cybersecurity is more than an IT issue – it’s a public safety and economic security priority.”
Cyber criminals can use advanced technology or subtle methods to access electronic devices that store sensitive information such as banking details, personal data, and other private material.
To help protect against cyber threats, the Las Cruces Police Department recommends several measures: staying informed about current threats; keeping devices updated with the latest security features; using strong, unique passwords; enabling two-factor authentication when possible; not sharing passwords or devices with others; being cautious of phishing attempts via email, messages, or phone calls from unknown sources; carefully checking URLs before clicking links; avoiding providing personal or financial information on unsecured websites; and ensuring that children and older adults understand basic cybersecurity practices.
The department emphasizes that these steps are important not only in October but throughout the year.
