Las Cruces Public Schools recognized outstanding educators and staff during the 2026 Celebration of Excellence Awards, held on April 24 at the New Mexico Farm and Range Heritage Museum.

The event highlighted the commitment of district employees to student success, drawing together Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz, Board of Education members, school leaders, families, and community partners. The annual ceremony was hosted by the Las Cruces Public Schools Foundation to celebrate staff achievements across the district.

Gena Bermudez, Executive Director of the Las Cruces Public Schools Foundation, welcomed attendees and acknowledged those who “inspire and motivate students across the district each day.” Finalists in each award category were honored for their dedication. The evening also showcased support from community sponsors who contributed monetary awards for winners in four categories: Teacher of the Year (Jacklyn Scarborough), Educational Support Personnel of the Year (Peggy Herrod), Service and Leadership Professional of the Year (Giovanna Musitano), and Principal of the Year (Dora Solis).

During the ceremony, educators who achieved National Board Certification were also recognized. Each recipient received flowers and a commemorative award presented by district leaders. Community sponsors provided $1,000 to each category winner and $500 to two finalists per category.

Las Cruces Public Schools promotes a vision where all learners thrive while honoring diversity according to its official website. The district operates 40 schools—including elementary schools, one K-8 school, eight middle schools, and seven high schools—and serves roughly 23,000 students with about 3,200 staff members according to its official website. Fairway Drive explosion and fire determined accidental by investigators

Investigators have determined that last week’s Fairway Drive explosion was accidental after finding an acetylene cylinder fueled it. The incident remains under review by medical authorities while displaced residents have returned home.
