Las Cruces Public Schools held its first districtwide Media Day at the Field of Dreams, bringing together students from various athletic and fine arts programs. The event, organized by LCPS.TV, included participation from over 70 students representing football, volleyball, cross country, soccer, and marching band.

Michelle Ronga, Athletic Director for Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS), said, “The collective effort to see the celebration of all students in all sports at the same level was the biggest celebration.”

Students took part in several activities throughout the day. They answered questions from local and regional reporters at a media press table and had professional headshots taken for team rosters and promotional materials. On-field activities allowed them to demonstrate their skills and school spirit in front of peers and staff.

Ronga noted the importance of having representatives from the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) present: “I think one of the big successes of the day was having the NMAA present to engage students from the south, or as we call it, the 575 area. We understand they aren’t logistically close to here, but since we’re the second biggest city in the state, having our kids represented was a wonderful opportunity for them.”

The event also featured a social media station where students created content for their schools’ platforms. A roundtable discussion moderated by Mesa Middle School media students gave participants an opportunity to discuss leadership and teamwork.
