Halloween is approaching, and the New Mexico State University Fire Department has released a set of safety recommendations for families planning to participate in trick-or-treating and other festivities on October 31.
The department emphasizes the importance of children staying close to their parents and not talking to strangers. It also advises parents to inspect their children’s candy before consumption to ensure it has not been tampered with. Costumes and decorations should be kept away from open flames, such as candles in jack-o’-lanterns, to prevent accidents.
Families are encouraged to establish a safe meeting place in case group members become separated. Parents should discuss with their children who they can approach for help if lost, such as police officers or another parent accompanied by children.
Pedestrian safety is also highlighted. The department reminds everyone to look both ways before crossing streets and to use crosswalks. Visibility is important; carrying a flashlight, glow stick, or wearing reflective items is recommended.
Motorists are urged to be vigilant for increased pedestrian activity, especially children, particularly on residential streets during Halloween night.
“With these tips in mind, we hope you have a safe night!” the NMSU Fire Department stated.
