U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez, who serves New Mexico’s 2nd district in Congress, addressed the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on New Mexico residents and national parks in a series of posts on social media.

On October 5, 2025, Vasquez highlighted the impact on federal employees, stating, “During a government shutdown, 22,000 federal workers in New Mexico could miss paychecks. I’m ready to work across the aisle and find real solutions that re-open the government and protect Americans’ health care.”

The following day, Vasquez turned his attention to national parks, writing, “Thousands of national park staff remain furloughed without pay, our parks are losing $1M a day in revenue, and nearby communities are losing $80M in visitor spending. Families are locked out, workers are left behind, and park resources are unprotected. The administration must get” on October 6, 2025.

On October 7, 2025, Vasquez added, “We deserve a New Mexico we can afford.”

Vasquez has served as the U.S. Representative for New Mexico’s 2nd district since 2023, after defeating Yvette Herrell in the 2024 general election with 52.1% of the vote. He replaced Herrell following that election.
