Rep. Gabe Vasquez, who represents New Mexico’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress, recently addressed issues ranging from drug smuggling and border security to federal funding for local projects in a series of posts on his social media account.
On December 2, 2025, Vasquez criticized the decision to pardon a major drug trafficker, stating: “There’s no excuse for pardoning a criminal convicted of smuggling 400 tons of cocaine into the U.S. You can’t claim to be against the cartels while you’re letting the kingpins out of prison. Shameful.”
Later that same day, he highlighted concerns about border security and drone activity along the U.S.-Mexico border: “I’ve spent a lot of time on the border and seen firsthand how cartels are using drones to outpace our agents. I’ve also met with leaders at White Sands Missile Range who have flagged concerns about drone incursions at our U.S. military installations, putting sensitive military” (December 2, 2025).
Two days later, on December 4, Vasquez announced new federal investments for his district: “I’m proud to bring $1M in federal funding home for Mesilla Town Hall and $850K for workforce training in Bayard. These projects will boost rural economic opportunities, train the next generation of farmers, and strengthen civic engagement. This is about delivering real results” (December 4, 2025).
Vasquez has been vocal on both law enforcement and community development issues since taking office in 2023 after defeating Yvette Herrell in the general election with 52.1% of the vote to Herrell’s 47.9%. As a member of Congress representing southern New Mexico, he has focused on addressing challenges at the border as well as securing resources for rural communities.
