Rep. Gabe Vasquez, U.S. Congressman representing New Mexico’s 2nd district, has recently highlighted issues affecting rural communities and conservation efforts in a series of posts on his official Twitter account.
On September 3, 2025, Vasquez discussed the importance of ranching to the state’s economy, stating, “Ranching is a New Mexico tradition and a $1 billion industry. I met with NM Cattle Growers President Tom Patterson to talk about their priorities, feeding Americans, and keeping rural communities in business.”
A day later, on September 4, 2025, he addressed land conservation policies: “Since 2001, the Roadless Rule has protected nearly 58 million acres of land and over 1,600 endangered plant and animal species. I’m doing everything I can to conserve our forests, rivers, and backcountry for the next generation.”
On September 6, 2025, Vasquez called for Congressional action to support rural areas: “When I met with county officials and educators back home, their message was clear: Without this funding, rural communities are in crisis. We must act now. I’m urging Congress to support the Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act so that rural New Mexico isn’t left behind.”
Vasquez assumed office in January 2023 after defeating Yvette Herrell in the general election held in November 2024 by securing approximately 52% of the vote. Since taking office as the representative for New Mexico’s 2nd district—an area encompassing many rural communities—he has focused on supporting agricultural interests and advocating for federal funding vital to these regions.
The Roadless Rule referenced by Vasquez is a federal regulation established in 2001 designed to limit road construction and logging on designated public lands across the United States. The Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act is legislation aimed at providing financial assistance to counties containing federal land which cannot be taxed locally.
