Las Cruces High School has established itself as a significant support system for students and families in the community through its food pantry and clothing closet initiatives. This year, the school received $2,500 in grant funding from the Albertsons Companies Foundation Nourishing Neighbors Program. The grant is part of "Explore. Act. Tell.", an experiential learning program designed to teach students how to address food insecurity.

Every second Monday of the month, Las Cruces High School organizes a food distribution drive-thru in the B-wing parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Various student organizations participate in preparing over 100 boxes of meals for families.

"We have the largest pantry in the district and the only high school to have both a pantry and clothing closet," said Annette Contreras, LCPS Title I Interventionist. "We actually supply the district's McKinney Vento Program with food for families throughout the district because of prior donations and grants we received. This concept is one that works for our community, and hopefully it can serve as a model for other schools in the district," Contreras added.

The initiative aims to educate youth about food insecurity issues using project-based learning strategies. Students are encouraged to explore topics, design actionable solutions, and share their stories through various media.

Community members interested in supporting these efforts can contact Annette Contreras at acontrer@lcps.net or call 575-527-6725 to donate canned food items, produce, clothing, or monetary contributions throughout the year.
