The longstanding rivalry between Mayfield High School and Las Cruces High School is set to be renewed with a series of events culminating in a football game on Friday, August 24th. This rivalry, considered one of the greatest in New Mexico high school history, will begin with an event on Saturday, August 17th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Field of Dreams Softball Complex.

"More than a Football Game," this kickoff event is exclusively for students from both schools who must present their student ID and donate a can of food for charity to gain entry. Students are required to carry their IDs at all times during the event and re-entry will not be permitted once they leave.

The event will feature various tailgate-style games, including the return of the Booster Chili Cook-Off. A highlight will be a staff vs staff kickball showdown. Additional competitions leading up to the main football game include hall decorating contests, assemblies, and bonfires.

Points will be awarded for each event, with the football game itself worth five points. If the score remains within that margin, the outcome of the football game will determine the overall winner.

The victorious school will receive a customized trophy created by Mayfield High School students. The trophy features MHS on one side and LCHS on the other. The winning school must display it in their front office with "Rivalry Winner" visible until it is won back by the opposing school.
