As temperatures continue to drop, the City of Las Cruces is taking steps to ensure the safety and comfort of its residents by providing accessible warming stations. The National Weather Service has forecasted frigid temperatures through Friday, January 24, 2025.
The city will activate its facility warming stations on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. Residents in need of warmth and shelter are encouraged to visit these designated facilities during specified hours:
- Frank O’Brien Papen Center at 304 Bell Avenue will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Meerscheidt Recreation Center located at 1600 E. Hadley Avenue will operate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Thomas Branigan Memorial Library at 200 E. Picacho Avenue will welcome visitors from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday.
- Munson Senior Center situated at 975 S. Mesquite Street will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Safe Café at 6121 Reynolds Drive will open its doors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Benavidez Center located at 1045 McClure Road will provide services from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Staff members at each center are prepared to assist anyone seeking refuge from the cold weather conditions.
In addition, the City of Las Cruces Utilities Department is set to implement new latches for trash carts over the next year and a half starting in early this year.
Furthermore, plans are underway for revitalizing neighborhoods around El Paseo and S Solano corridors between Lohman and University Avenues as part of an ongoing project aimed at enhancing community spaces.
Residents interested in participating in local activities can join Las Cruces Public Libraries' poetry discussions or enroll in the Citizens Police Academy's tuition-free program scheduled for spring.
