NMSU celebrates black history month with diverse events throughout february

New Mexico State University (NMSU) will observe Black History Month in February with a series of events organized by the Black Student Association, Black Programs, Men of Color Initiative, and other campus entities.

The celebrations begin with a Black History Month lunch on February 4 at Taos cafeteria in Corbett Center Student Union, sponsored by Sodexo, Black Programs, and the Black Student Association. Students with meal plans can attend, while faculty or staff should contact Black Programs to participate.

On February 5, NMSU will host a Social Advocacy Luncheon in collaboration with American Indian Programs and the Doña Ana County NAACP chapter. The event will take place at the American Indian Student Center and is open to all NMSU students, faculty, and staff free of charge.

The Men of Color Initiative will host “Creative Expression,” an event exploring music, art, dance, and the African American experience on February 7 at Rentfrow Hall dance studio. This free event welcomes participants of all dance levels.

On February 8, "City Connections" will be held in O’Donnell Hall auditorium featuring City of Las Cruces Manager Ikani Taumoepeau as keynote speaker. This session offers students a chance to engage with city officials.

"Loving Abroad," scheduled for February 11 at Corbett Center Student Union’s Senate Chambers, aims to provide insights into the Black experience abroad. Hosted by NMSU’s Education Abroad and National Student Exchange programs, it includes information about study opportunities and a $500 scholarship for eligible students.

A screening of “10,000 Black Men Named George” will occur on the evening of February 11 at Fountain Theater in Mesilla. Sponsored by various NMSU organizations including NEA and Africana Studies, this film highlights union activist Asa Philip Randolph's work in organizing Pullman Rail Company porters during the 1920s.

“Black Voices at NMSU” is set for February 12 in Corbett Center Student Union’s Doña Ana Room. It focuses on personal stories within the Black community at NMSU. Patrick Turner from the Men of Color Initiative states: “We will explore strategies for creating an inclusive environment that empowers Black individuals to thrive academically, socially and professionally at NMSU.”

Black Programs and the Black Student Association will be acknowledged during a men's basketball game against Florida International University on February 15 at Pan American Center.

The first-ever Black History Month Quiz Bowl occurs on February 18 at Conroy Honors College. For details, contact Desirae Price from NMSU NAACP chapter.

On February 20, “Preserving Our Story” presents insights into the archives managed by Black Programs at Branson Library. Featured speakers include alumna Lauretta King and Erin Wahl from NMSU Library’s Archives.

The “Cultural Mosaic: Voices and Rhythms of Diversity Variety Show” takes place on February 22 in Corbett Center Student Union auditorium. Patrick Turner notes: “The show will celebrate the rich tapestry of diversity."

“Celebrating the Firsts,” recognizing significant contributions by figures like Fredd Young and Delano Lewis to NMSU history occurs on February 27 at Fulton Center Aggie Memorial Stadium.

Bobbie Green from Doña Ana County NAACP remarks: "Local talent will be on full display during Black History Month." The month concludes with a craft night honoring Marsha P. Johnson's legacy on February 25 at Garcia Hall hosted by multiple campus organizations including LGBT+ Programs.

Anthropology student Desirae Price encourages participation throughout these events to foster community ties: "Our programs across campus work together to create a strong community."

Throughout this period Zuhl Library features a “Books That Inspire” display curated by local faculty while commemorative T-shirts are available through partnerships between university initiatives.
