The Las Cruces Public Libraries, in collaboration with GECU and the IRS, is offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This initiative provides free tax assistance from IRS-certified VITA volunteers at the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library located at 200 E. Picacho Ave. The program began on Super Saturday, February 1, and will continue until April 14, 2025.

Regular hours for the VITA program are set for Mondays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, excluding President’s Day on February 17, and Thursdays from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. The sessions are available on a first-come, first-served basis due to limited space. More information can be found at freetaxeselpaso.org.

Residents seeking tax services should bring their ID, Social Security Card/ITIN, proof of direct deposit, a copy of last year’s tax return, and form 1095-A if applicable. For married couples filing jointly, both individuals must be present with their information. College students need to know whether they are claimed as dependents by their guardians. If all timeslots are filled for the day, walk-ins may not be accommodated.

The VITA program does not cover tax returns for residents of Puerto Rico, foreign students, farm income/losses, foreign earned income, rental income or military personnel.
