Las Cruces Public Libraries is marking February with a series of events under the theme "February is for Lovers." The initiative features film screenings and book discussions aimed at celebrating Latiné-X literature and stories.
The first event will be a screening of the film "Love in the Time of Cholera," based on the novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This screening will take place from 2-4:30 p.m. on Monday, February 10, in the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. The movie carries an R rating.
"Love in the Time of Cholera" narrates the love story between Fermina Daza, Florentino Ariza, and her husband Juvenal Urbino. A discussion about both the book and film will be held during the monthly meeting of the Latiné-X Lit Book Club from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on February 25, also in the Staff Conference Room. This session is part of Latiné-X Lit on FILM, a series accompanying the book club.
Another event planned is a screening by the English as Second Language Film Club of "West Side Story" (1961), scheduled from 1-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library's Staff Conference Room. The ESL Film Club focuses on Latine-X authored plays adapted into films in English with Spanish subtitles. After viewing, participants will read a scene to practice pronunciation.
Described as a modern adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet," "West Side Story" was noted for its cultural representation when released and remains relevant to Latino communities today.
The library offers more Latiné-X stories for exploration; interested individuals can obtain a recommended reading list at the reference desk. Throughout February, there will also be a special “Love is Love” book display in the teen section.
Copies of "Love in the Time of Cholera" are available at the reference desk, with e-reader copies accessible via Libby app in Spanish.
