The Office of Outreach and Recruiting in New Mexico State University’s College of Engineering is currently accepting applications for the NM PREP Middle School Academy and NM PREP High School Academy, set to take place this summer at the Las Cruces campus. The program, which has been running for over eight years, aims to spark student interest in STEM, specifically in engineering, through hands-on activities.

Clara Raley, STEM program manager, expressed excitement about the upcoming program, stating, “This summer, we are excited to once again provide this wonderful program to students.” She highlighted that NM PREP Academy offers hands-on activities that simulate real-world engineering experiences, aiming to inspire students in the field of engineering.

The NM PREP High School Academy, scheduled for June 17-21, will allow high school students to explore engineering fields, introductory concepts, semiconductors, and 3D printing. On the other hand, the NM PREP Middle School Academy, taking place from June 10-14, will provide middle school students with the opportunity to delve into real-world engineering problems through inquiry and hands-on learning.

Additionally, the NM PREP Mission Space, scheduled for July 9-12, will be open to middle school students who have participated in PREP or another STEM program. This particular camp will focus on applying critical thinking and engineering skills to plan a successful space mission, including aspects like rocketry and robotics.

Clara Raley emphasized that all programs incorporate hands-on projects that promote exploration of concepts, making the fast-paced program an engaging way for students to spend a week during the summer. She mentioned that student feedback has been positive, with many appreciating the group projects and fun activities offered during the camps.

Interested individuals can apply for the camps with no cost involved, and project materials, snacks, and lunch will be provided during the sessions. In-person attendance is mandatory for all participants.
