New Mexico State University celebrated its annual Founders Day on April 24 at Traders Plaza to honor the university's history and heritage. During the event, the prestigious “A” Mountain Staff Award and the Aggie Legend accolades were bestowed upon deserving recipients.
Freddie Romero, an academic adviser at the Center for Academic Advising and Student Support, was awarded the “A” Mountain Staff Award for his unwavering dedication to student success. Romero expressed his gratitude by stating, "My colleagues and I in the advising center always take a holistic approach when it comes to working with students."
In addition, Romero's commitment to diversity and inclusivity was highlighted by his colleagues. David Perez remarked, “Freddie believes that diversity is not just a checkbox to be ticked but a fundamental principle that enriches the academic experience.” Milen Bartnik added, “Freddie embodies the very ideals that define a true leader.”
The late Herb Wimberly, a distinguished figure in NMSU's golf program, was posthumously honored as the Aggie Legend for his remarkable contributions to the university. Wimberly's dedication to NMSU's golf program and his role in establishing the Professional Golf Management program were recognized during the ceremony.
Moreover, the NMSU support staff was acknowledged on Administrative Professionals Day. Notably, John Porter Bloom was commended for his endowment gift to the NMSU Library in honor of his grandfather, John R. McFie, one of the university's founders.
The awards ceremony showcased the exemplary individuals who embody NMSU's core values and strive to enhance the academic experience for students. As Academic Adviser Freddie Romero received the “A” Mountain Staff Award, his commitment and leadership were truly recognized by his peers and the university community.
