New Mexico State University Global Campus is expanding its microlearning program in response to increasing demand for flexible, industry-relevant education. This expanded offering now includes a broader range of courses designed to equip professionals with the skills needed to thrive in today’s job market.
The rise of microcredentials is driven by the need for specific, up-to-date skills that align with the rapidly evolving job market. "Our microlearning courses are developed in collaboration with industry experts, ensuring that students acquire the relevant skills necessary to excel in their careers," said Andrew Sedillo, director of Microcredentials Instructional Design at NMSU Global. "We aim to make education more accessible and directly applicable to current market demands."
The program offers a range of short, focused courses that allow students to learn at their own pace, making it easier to balance education with professional and personal responsibilities. The program caters to those looking to upskill or reskill without the long-term commitment of traditional degree programs.
The economic advantages of microlearning are significant. These courses provide a cost-effective way to gain new skills, enhancing employability and earning potential. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, there has been a notable decline in traditional degree completions, highlighting the growing importance of alternative educational pathways. The same report shows a record high in certificate earning, reflecting the increasing preference for shorter, more targeted educational achievements.
NMSU Global is committed to transforming higher education by integrating microcredentials into its offerings. This initiative not only meets the needs of the workforce but also enhances the traditional educational experience. "By providing specialized skills that complement traditional degrees, we help our students stay competitive and prepared for the future," Sedillo said.
The program now includes an even more diverse array of courses such as Introduction to Grant Writing, Project Management, Spatial Computing, Virtual Reality for Business, Easy Statement of Purpose, Instructional Design in the Metaverse, Innovation and Product Development, Starting a Virtual Assistant Business, and English Skills for Academic Success.
Additionally, taking the English Skills for Academic Success course waives the English proficiency test required by NMSU. AI courses for everyone and cybersecurity courses are currently being developed and will be launched soon.
This expansion allows NMSU Global Campus to better serve the educational needs of a broad audience from working professionals to lifelong learners and even international students.
