The Institute for Applied Practice in AI and Machine Learning is one of the initiatives highlighted in the New Mexico State University Foundation's annual fundraising drive, known as the 1888 Minutes of Giving. This event coincides with NMSU Founders Day and occurs from 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, to 4:28 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23.
Enrico Pontelli, dean of NMSU’s College of Arts and Sciences and a senior adviser to the provost for AI, stated, “In the last 10 years, we have witnessed a quantum leap in this technology.” He also emphasized the mission of the AI Institute to unite AI researchers, educators, and practitioners at NMSU and to lead regional and state efforts in applying AI models and technologies to practical solutions addressing real-world issues pertinent to New Mexico.
NMSU, with a $2 million grant from the state, is enhancing its research and education capabilities in AI to meet the workforce, research, and economic development needs of New Mexico. This support also covers state-wide initiatives like the New Mexico AI Consortium, with the goal of positioning NMSU as a national leader in applied AI research and inclusive AI education.
The AI Institute aims to be a premier hub for innovation and learning, offering students unique opportunities by linking academic knowledge with practical application. Donations to the AI Institute will:
- Offer scholarships and resources to ensure equal access to AI education.
- Establish advanced labs and facilities for cutting-edge research.
- Attract global researchers, educators, and innovators to contribute their expertise.
- Develop solutions for societal and environmental issues, impacting lives globally.
Contributions to the AI Institute during the 1888 Minutes of Giving will be matched up to $500,000 through a donation from NMSU President Valerio Ferme’s office.
Initiated in 2024 as part of Founders Day, the 1888 Minutes of Giving campaign pays tribute to NMSU's original founders and supports various projects.
