New Mexico State University (NMSU) will mark its recent Carnegie R1 status recognition with its annual Research and Creativity Week from April 23 to April 29. This event will feature over 25 on-campus and off-campus events, including thesis exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, and a metal-pouring demonstration. With an expected participation of more than 500 people, the event aims to emphasize the contributions of researchers at all academic levels under the theme "Ascent to R1."
Luis Cifuentes, NMSU's vice president of research, creativity, and economic development, stated, “Becoming a Carnegie R1 institution is an achievement worthy of a weeklong celebration. This transformational moment in NMSU’s history belongs to the faculty, students, and staff whose creativity, scholarship, and dedication made it possible. Let’s honor their work, and our collective future, together.”
Aubrey Iglesias, chair of the NMSU University Research Council and an associate professor at the NMSU Library, explained, “RCW 2025 provides numerous opportunities for members of the public to explore the research and creativity being conducted by NMSU researchers that has implications for the wider society and offers the public the chance to engage with researchers about their work.”
The event will include a keynote presentation by Talitha Washington, executive director of the Howard University Center for Applied Data Science and Analytics, titled “Empowering the Next Generation to Drive Research and Innovation.” Washington, a renowned mathematical scholar, will deliver her speech on April 24 at the Corbett Center Student Union auditorium.
Ramona Emerson, a Diné writer and filmmaker, will also provide a keynote address on April 23 at the University Art Museum. A panel discussion entitled “Ascent to R1: Which Path Will We Take?” will be moderated by Cifuentes and participate by several faculty members, including NMSU's interim Provost Lakshmi Reddi and others.
Bertha A. Bermúdez Tapia, an assistant professor of sociology, will lead a faculty plenary on April 28, discussing the impacts of state power on migrant lives and violence, particularly at the U.S.-Mexico border.
RCW will also highlight student research, featuring presentations by 235 undergraduate students and 130 graduate students, culminating in an awards ceremony on April 28.
