The Department of Art at New Mexico State University is set to host Ebitenyefa Baralaye, a distinguished sculptor and ceramicist, as part of the NMSU Visiting Artist Lecture Series. The event will take place on Monday, October 7, at 6 p.m. in Devasthali Hall. Attendees have the option to join in person or via Zoom.
Baralaye's work has been displayed both nationally and internationally in galleries such as Friedman Benda Gallery in New York, David Klein Gallery in Detroit, Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Los Angeles, the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, and the Korea Ceramic Foundation in Icheon.
The artist's creations focus on cultural, spiritual, and material translations interpreted through a diaspora lens. His approach blends craft and design aesthetics into abstract forms. "Ebitenyefa Baralaye has refined his experimental approach to ceramic sculpture over the past decade," reads a statement accompanying a courtesy photo. The process involves intricate press-modeling techniques that produce durable yet lightweight plaster molds crafted entirely by hand.
This lecture presents an opportunity for students and art enthusiasts to engage with Baralaye's unique perspective on ceramics and sculpture.
