The Asian and Pacific Islander Program at New Mexico State University (NMSU) is set to host a series of events this fall, celebrating the diverse communities of Asian, Asian American, Arab, and Pacific Islanders on campus. The lineup includes both traditional and new events.

Sophia Sangwanthong, director of the API Program, expressed her satisfaction with the community partnerships formed over time. “I am so happy with all the community partnerships we have amassed and all of the work we have done to make the Asian, Asian American, Arab and Pacific Islander communities of NMSU feel seen, represented and valued as important parts of NMSU culture,” she said.

A highlight is the Filipino American History Month celebration on October 17 in Corbett Center Student Union ballrooms. Undergraduate student Kim Ballou shared her enthusiasm: “Being able to celebrate and share my Filipino American heritage with the greater NMSU community is incredibly meaningful for me.”

Professor Chadrhyn Pedraza emphasized its significance: “Celebrating Filipino Heritage Month at NMSU is a significant moment for our community as it recognizes the rich cultural tapestry of our group.”

The second annual Asian Horror Film Festival will occur on October 21 in Milton Hall's Creative Media Institute Theater. The festival will screen films like "Perfect Blue" and "Train to Busan."

An Anime and Cosplay Convention will take place on October 23 in collaboration with various clubs including LGBT+ Programs. Spacee Kadett from Los Angeles will lead a dinner discussion about Asian American and Arab American experiences before performing at the Halloween Drag Show on October 29.

In partnership with NMSU’s Indian Student Association, Roshni will be celebrated on November 3. Manusha Vemulapalli highlighted its importance: “Roshni... symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.”

All these events are free for NMSU students, while Roshni and Filipino American Heritage Month celebrations welcome community participation.
