Students, faculty, and staff at New Mexico State University (NMSU) employ a variety of transportation devices to navigate the campus. The array includes skateboards, bicycles, and electronic devices like hoverboards, e-skates, e-scooters, and segues, along with assistive devices for individuals with disabilities.
While pedestrians are given priority on campus pathways, the university reminds everyone to exercise caution when using or walking near these transportation methods.
"Pedestrians have the right-of-way," states NMSU's safety guidelines. "All vehicles should give pedestrians priority and maintain a safe distance."
The guidelines also emphasize adherence to traffic rules: "Obey traffic rules. All types of transportation devices should comply with all traffic signs and signals and yield to pedestrians."
Regarding e-scooters specifically, NMSU clarifies their legal classification: "E-scooters are not considered mopeds under state law and fall under electric mobility devices with speeds under 20 mph. They do not need to be licensed or insured."
Additionally, there are restrictions on where these devices can be used on campus: "No use in NMSU residence halls or libraries. The use of bicycles, skates, skateboards, hover boards as well as their electronic versions is prohibited inside NMSU’s residential facilities and libraries." However, assistive devices for disabled persons remain permitted indoors.
Safety concerns extend beyond mere usage; reckless behavior is discouraged: "No stunts or reckless behavior. Performing tricks, jumping off curbs or riding aggressively is discouraged based on safety concerns."
To prevent thefts of scooters and bicycles, the university advises using U-locks over cable locks for securing property: "Scooter/bicycle theft prevention. Use U-locks instead of cable locks when securing a scooter or bicycle to a rack or structure and consider using an airtag to track your property." Students are also encouraged to keep records such as photos and serial numbers of their belongings.
In case any suspicious activity is observed related to thefts or misuse of transportation devices on campus grounds, students are urged to report it promptly: "If you notice any suspicious activity, contact NMSU Police at 646-3311."
Electronic transportation devices may operate in areas designated for bicycles on the NMSU campus. The university underscores the importance of vigilance from both drivers of these devices and pedestrians alike for mutual safety.
