The New Mexico State University Board of Regents has unanimously approved the contract for Valerio Ferme as the incoming university system president. This decision was made during a special meeting on October 25. Ferme is set to begin his employment on November 18, starting with a transition period where he will engage with stakeholders across various university campuses, agricultural science centers, cooperative extension offices, and other entities throughout New Mexico.

Mónica Torres will continue her role as interim president until the end of 2024, while Ferme officially takes over as university president on January 1, 2025. In his message to the campus community, Ferme expressed gratitude and humility: “My family and I are honored to join the land-grant institution of the state of New Mexico, even as I am humbled by the responsibility that this role entails toward our campuses and communities and, equally importantly, to the citizenry and government of the state.”

NMSU Regent Chair Ammu Devasthali shared enthusiasm about Ferme's appointment: “We are very excited to have Dr. Ferme join us. The Board of Regents will stand with Dr. Ferme, side-by-side, in true partnership to lead this university. We know NMSU is capable of achieving even bigger and better things and we’re looking forward to our future together.”

Ferme’s contract extends until January 1, 2030. It includes a tenured faculty position at full professor rank in the Department of English within the College of Arts and Sciences. The agreement also stipulates an annual evaluation process. Additionally, it provides for Ferme and his family to reside at the NMSU President’s Residence.

Ferme’s complete message addressed to the NMSU community can be accessed online.
