Frances Gutierrez-Olona, a clinical lab manager and dental assistant at Doña Ana Community College's Dental Hygiene Program, has been awarded the Stephen W. and Robert E. Roberts Memorial Staff Award for 2024. The award recognizes her dedication and service as a non-exempt employee at New Mexico State University (NMSU).

Gutierrez-Olona will receive the annual cash award during a ceremony scheduled for Friday, November 22, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Corbett Center Student Union's Doña Ana Room.

Expressing her emotions upon receiving the news of the award, Gutierrez-Olona stated, "This reward reinforces my belief that if you set goals, you can make things happen by fostering a supportive environment." She added that she is inspired to continue working towards future goals.

Janaya Bunker, a dental instructor at DACC, praised Gutierrez-Olona's commitment and professionalism. "Fran’s willingness to go above and beyond her assigned tasks, along with her unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional results, sets her apart as a truly outstanding professional," Bunker said.

Gutierrez-Olona began her career in 2010 as a part-time employee in the Dental Assisting Program and became a full-time employee in the Dental Hygiene Program in 2014. Over her 14-year tenure at DACC, she has achieved notable accomplishments. "She is so exceptional at her job that all DACC inspections have been found to be 100% in compliance since 2016 under her management," Bunker noted. Her efforts have also contributed to the accreditation of both dental programs for two consecutive cycles.

Reflecting on her impact at NMSU, Gutierrez-Olona expressed gratitude for making a difference. "I feel deeply honored and fulfilled to know that my contributions have positively impacted the university," she said. She emphasized the high standards set within their dental program and how they prepare students for employment opportunities post-graduation.

Gutierrez-Olona appreciates working collaboratively with colleagues. "I love my co-workers," she shared.

Bunker further highlighted Gutierrez-Olona's positive influence on team dynamics. "Fran is always approachable and pleasant, making her a trusted and valued member of the team," Bunker remarked. Her leadership style balances strength with warmth and inclusivity.
