The Hunt Center for Entrepreneurship at New Mexico State University’s Arrowhead Center has recognized Qianyun (Gloria) Zhang, an assistant professor in the civil engineering department, with the inaugural Aggie Construction Innovator of the Year Award. The award ceremony took place on February 27 and highlighted Zhang's contributions to structural health monitoring, advanced materials, and data-driven construction solutions.

This award is part of the Mike Hunt Construction Sprints program and aims to honor faculty who demonstrate leadership and creativity in the construction industry. The event was held alongside NMSU’s Hult Prize Student Idea Pitch Competition, focusing on innovation within the construction sector.

“It is a privilege to be the first recipient of the Aggie Construction Innovator of the Year Award,” Zhang said. “This recognition reinforces the importance of bridging cutting-edge research with real-world applications. I am grateful to the Hunt Center and the Mike Hunt Construction Sprints program for their support in fostering innovation among faculty and students alike.”

Carlos Murguia, director of the Hunt Center, emphasized how this award supports advancements in construction technology and entrepreneurship at NMSU. “At the Hunt Center, we believe in empowering faculty and students to push the boundaries of innovation,” Murguia said. “Dr. Zhang’s work exemplifies the kind of transformative impact we aim to support through the Mike Hunt Construction Sprints program. Her leadership in research and mentorship is inspiring the next generation of engineers and entrepreneurs.”

Zhang is also known for founding Z-Lab at NMSU, which has been instrumental in promoting construction research and student innovation. Her efforts have gained attention through entrepreneurship competitions like Bold Idea Challenge and Aggie Shark Tank.

The event concluded with entrepreneurial pitches that discussed future trends in construction technology, reaffirming the Hunt Center's dedication to fostering innovation while providing resources for students and faculty.
