Thursday, March 6, 2025, weather conditions in Southwest New Mexico are forecasted to include wind speeds of 30-40 mph with southwest gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Due to these conditions, travel advisories have been issued for high winds and blowing dust.
The period of highest impact from strong winds and blowing dust is expected between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Travelers are advised to monitor local forecasts before beginning their journeys and to check the New Mexico Roads website for current roadway information. Conditions can change rapidly, with blowing dust potentially developing into blinding dust storms in remote areas.
Guidelines have been provided for those who may encounter a dust storm while traveling:
- Avoid driving into or through a dust storm.
- Do not wait until visibility is poor; exit the highway as soon as possible.
- If encountering a dust storm, check traffic around your vehicle and begin slowing down.
- Do not stop on the roadway; pull completely off the travel lanes onto the right shoulder.
- Stop the vehicle at a safe distance from the main roadway and other vehicles.
- Turn off all vehicle lights, including emergency flashers.
- Set your emergency brake and remove your foot from the brake pedal.
- Remain in the vehicle with seat belts fastened until the storm passes.
Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be particularly cautious of changing weather conditions and reduce their speed accordingly.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation will monitor roadway conditions alongside local law enforcement. Updates will be available on the New Mexico Roads website or by calling 511.
