Las Cruces police chief provides update on March 13 shooting

Las Cruces Police Department Chief Jeremy Story provided updates on the March 13 shooting incident during a news conference held on March 20. The shooting took place on the 800 block of south Main Street in Las Cruces, injuring a suspect identified as Gabriel Padilla.

The 19-year-old Padilla was shot at least once and is currently hospitalized in serious but stable condition. Upon his release, he will face charges including aggravated assault on a peace officer, negligent use of a deadly weapon, and resisting or obstructing an officer. He will be booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.

The involved officer, who joined the Las Cruces Police Department in August 2021 as a lateral transfer with seven years of law enforcement experience, has been placed on administrative leave following standard protocol for such incidents.
