A 15-year-old boy was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon for his involvement in a shooting that occurred at Young Park last Friday. The arrest took place around 12:20 p.m. on March 23, with the suspect facing three open counts of murder. Three other individuals have also been arrested in connection with this case, including two 17-year-old boys and a 20-year-old named Tomas Rivas, all facing similar charges. Authorities indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming.
The juveniles are being held in the juvenile section of the Dona Ana County Detention Center, while Rivas is detained on the adult side without bond.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are involved in the ongoing investigation. These include the Las Cruces Police Department, FBI, ATF, New Mexico State Police, Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The shooting incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on March 21 at Young Park located at 850 S. Walnut St. It resulted in the deaths of Andrew Madrid, aged 16; Jason Gomez, aged 18; and Dominick Estrada, aged 19. Fifteen other victims survived and range from ages 16 to 36.
Following the incident, Young Park and nearby roads were closed to allow investigators to gather evidence and map out the scene but have since reopened.
