Las Cruces Mayor Eric Enriquez will be honored as this year's recipient of the "Hometown Hero" award at the Las Cruces International Film Festival. The award will be presented during a ceremony at the festival which is scheduled to run from April 9 to 13. The festival, presented by New Mexico State University and Visit Las Cruces, claims the title of the largest student-run festival in the country. It's managed entirely by NMSU film students under the guidance of Ross Marks, founder and executive director of the festival.
The "Hometown Hero" award annually recognizes individuals with ties to Las Cruces who have made significant contributions locally and beyond. Enriquez will be honored at the LCIFF awards ceremony on April 12 at 7 p.m. at the Rio Grande Theatre. Those interested can purchase VIP tickets for $200 on the festival's website.
Enriquez's career spans various roles, including business owner, firefighter, arson investigator, and director of community services. He has served as Las Cruces' fire marshal, deputy fire chief, fire chief, and assistant city manager. Ross Marks noted, "Mayor Eric Enriquez’s commitment and love of the city of Las Cruces is apparent in everything he does."
The festival has previously recognized figures such as New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and others for their contributions. Enriquez, raised in Las Cruces and a graduate of NMSU, continues to engage in community activities, especially those supporting youth and various local organizations.
The event promises a turnout of more than 12,000 moviegoers this year. VIP passes cost $200, with various options available for different levels of access. The Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment award will be given to actress Helen Hunt. Tickets are on sale for the event.
