The Parks and Recreation Department has announced a series of hiking and walking events scheduled throughout April and May. Starting April 11 and running through May 23, 2025, these weekly outdoor activities will be held at various locations in the Southwest region. Open to individuals of all ages and skill levels, the initiative aims to promote social interaction and improve health through physical activity.
Participants are required to register by the day before their chosen event. Registration can be completed in person at the Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center located at 304 W. Bell Ave or online by selecting the Adult and Family Programs tab.
Events occur each Friday, starting at 9 a.m. Attendees are advised to bring suitable footwear and prepare for weather conditions with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and ample water supply. Some trail locations may also necessitate a parking pass. The schedule includes:
- April 11: Picacho Mountain (2.2 miles), location TBD
- April 18: Dripping Springs Trail (3 miles), meet at Dripping Springs Natural Area, 15000 Dripping Springs Road
- April 25: Ridge Line and Discovery (3.2 miles), location TBD
- May 2: Mesilla Valley Bosque Trail (1.6 miles), meet at 5000 Calle del Norte, Mesilla, N.M.
- May 9: Veterans Park Dam (2.8 miles), meet at Roadrunner Parkway, Las Cruces, N.M. 88011
- May 16: La Cueva Loop Trail (2.9 miles), meet at Dripping Springs Natural Area, 15000 Dripping Springs Road
- May 23: "A" Mountain (5 miles), meet at the parking lot accessed from University Avenue/Dripping Springs Road, east of the Sonoma Ranch Boulevard intersection

April is also recognized as Safe Digging Month. Residents are encouraged to call 811 for guidance on safely locating and marking underground utilities. Further resources and community initiatives are available for citizens of Las Cruces, ranging from water conservation programs and high school career readiness to police department outreach sessions and library workshops.
