New Mexico House Republican Rod Montoya said taxpayers deserve a bill of rights.

Montoya intends to focus on introducing a bill titled the "New Mexico Taxpayer Bill of Rights," or TABOR. If passed into law, the bill would put limits on spending. It would also require that both the state House and Senate have a three-fifths majority in order to raise taxes.

If the law passes the legislature, then it would be sent to voters to decide whether to amend the state constitution.

“New Mexico’s taxpayers deserve fiscal responsibility and protection from excessive government spending. With a TABOR amendment we can achieve both goals," Montoya said.

During her term, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill into law that raised taxes in the state. There has also been additional spending for other government programs and projects.

“These increases are not only unsustainable, they are irresponsible," Montoya said.
