Amid the current COVID-19 pandemic that has forced businesses to shut down, the Sierra County Commission made a plea to the governor asking for businesses to reopen.
The county approved a resolution last week to ask Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to open businesses, citing the long-term impact on the economy and that the county has no confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
Sierra County Manager Bruce Swingle told KRQE News he is concerned about potential unemployment, foreclosure, and people losing their properties due to repossession.
As opposed to large towns where people can easily access credit and employment, Swingle shared his concerns on how smaller communities might find it harder to recover from the pandemic. According to Swingle, recreational and non-essential businesses must be allowed to operate in the same manner as essential ones to help ease the economic hardship faced across the county.
The commissioners made a case on the fact that the county has no record of COVID-19 cases, which gives them a chance of reopening businesses with little risks involved.
