Talking on the Phone or Answering a Text While You’re on the Road Can Lead to Serious Consequences for You and Others

Talking on the phone or answering a text while you’re on the road may seem innocent enough, but it can lead to serious consequences for you and others. Distracted drivers using cell phones while operating a motor vehicle make the roadways less safe because you are not giving your full attention to the road. This can lead to accidents, and in some cases, death. Several cities in New Mexico (including Las Cruces) have adapted laws prohibiting the use of handheld devices for all drivers.

When you see a roadway incident, stay alert (off the phone), reduce speed, and – if possible – change lanes to keep drivers, passengers, and incident responders safe.
