Born and raised in the Mesilla Valley, Doña Ana County Assessor Leticia Duarte-Benavidez first joined the us as an employee with the Housing Management Office in June 1983. In 1986, she became an Administrative Assistant and in 1987, she was promoted to Housing Supervisor where she earned another promotion in 1994, as the Housing Coordinator.
In 2000 she became the County’s Grants Administrator and in 2002, she transferred to the Water Utilities Department. She returned to General Services in 2003 and retired from that role in 2008, when she was elected to serve as a commissioner for District 5. She served as commissioner for two 4-year terms, through 2016 and chaired the board for a term.
In 2010, Benavidez testified in the Doña Ana County Wilderness Field Hearing advocating for the enactment of S. 1689, the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks Wilderness Act. “Protecting our mountains has been a community-supported effort for many years,” she said. She told of several memories with her family in the Organ Mountains, over Baylor Pass and the Sandia Mountains. She advocated for federal protections of the Organ, Robledo, Doña Ana, Potrillo, and Sierra de Las Uvas Mountains, along with Broad Canyon.
Committed to public service, Benavidez was elected to county assessor in 2018 and ran a campaign focused on enhancing the Assessor’s Office professionalism, giving staff an opportunity to do their work, providing more training and treating them with professionalism and transparency. Her goal was to treat residents with dignity and respect and explain to them how the assessment of their properties was completed.
She is now retiring at the end of this year, with more than 35 years of dedicated public service in a wide range of roles. We wish her well in this next chapter of her life and thank her for the tireless commitment she gave to the residents of Doña Ana County!
