By the time the 1A boys state championship was over, the PIT was nearly full. The players from small towns got to play in front of a packed PIT. I wish every state tournament bound team would play at the PIT. Unfortunately, only the championship game is played at the PIT.
This year it featured undefeated Magdalena Steers against Ft. Sumner/House. The Steers were riding a 46-game winning streak, which ranks the 5th best ever.
Ft. Sumner led by Coach Brad Holland avenged an earlier in the season loss to beat the Steers 45-43. Ft. Sumner HS joined House HS to field a team. Ft. Sumner’s population is about 800 and House’s is about 50. The #2 Seed Ft. Sumner/House led all but 26 seconds of the game. The took a 32-21 lead into halftime.
The Steers came back to the tie the game with 6 seconds. Thinking they were behind one of the Steers players cause a foul, which cause two free throws to be made.
6’8” Cash Burney gave the Steers fits on both ends of the court. He had 14 points.
The 1973 State Champions, Lordsburg HS were honored at halftime. For two seasons – 1972=1973 & 1973-1974, the Mavericks went 60-1 and went on a 47-game winning streak, which ranks 3rd all-time.
