New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service is set to host the New Mexico Youth Ranch Management Camp from June 9 to 14 at the CS Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. According to Sid Gordon, NMSU Extension agriculture agent and NMYRMC co-chair, the camp offers a unique educational experience for youth interested in ranch management.

“Going to camp was a life-changing experience for 27 New Mexico youth. They didn’t participate in recreational activities and crafts, but received college-level instruction in managing a ranch,” Gordon stated, emphasizing the focus on practical learning rather than traditional camp activities.

The camp, open to individuals aged 15-19, aims to provide in-depth knowledge on various aspects of ranch management. Participants will engage in activities related to animal care, breeding management, industry strategies, marketing tools, economics, natural resource management, and rangeland monitoring. The program includes hands-on experiences to enhance learning.

Gordon highlighted the collaborative effort among Extension specialists, county Extension agents, and ranching industry members to offer a comprehensive learning experience for the youth. He mentioned, “The collaboration between Extension specialists, county Extension agents and members of the ranching industry provides an opportunity for youth to learn about the many aspects of ranching.”

Interested individuals can apply for the camp, with an application deadline of April 15 and acceptance notifications to be sent out by April 22. The camp will accommodate 30 participants, with three slots reserved for out-of-state applicants. Scholarship opportunities will be available for selected participants. Accepted applicants are required to submit a registration fee of $400 or make payment arrangements by June 2.
