National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Laney will be the featured speaker at the upcoming “Cambios Climate Change Speaker Series” event hosted by New Mexico State University. Laney, who has been serving as a warning coordination meteorologist in the El Paso/Santa Teresa area for 14 years, will address the topic of extreme weather and climate change.
The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9 at the Rio Grande Theatre on 211 N. Main Street. The presentation is open to the public and free of charge. The series aims to facilitate informed discussions about climate change by inviting experts from various fields.
Laney expressed the importance of educating the public about climate change, stating, "While there are many different opinions on the cause of climate change, it is hard to deny that conditions are definitely changing." He also highlighted the NWS's commitment to building a "Climate Ready Nation" through initiatives aimed at enhancing resilience and responsiveness.
As part of their efforts, the weather service focuses on providing essential information to community decision-makers, especially in regions like El Paso and Santa Teresa where summers are progressively becoming hotter. Laney will elaborate on the strategies employed by the local office to communicate effectively with residents and issue timely warnings about upcoming weather events.
The talk by Laney marks the conclusion of the speaker series for the Spring 2024 semester. Those interested in future events can visit cambios.nmsu.edu or contact cambios@nmsu.edu for more information.
The session with Laney will offer valuable insights into the impacts of climate change on extreme weather events and the measures being taken to address these challenges.
