New Mexico State University’s Model United Nations team once again showcased their excellence at the 2024 MUN conference in New York City, where they were awarded the prestigious Outstanding Delegation award. The team has a remarkable track record, having achieved top honors in 17 out of the last 18 years.

Neil Harvey, the government professor and department head who accompanied the students as their advisor, expressed his pride in the team, stating, “I am very proud of each member of our team for their hard work in preparation for this conference and for their ability to work well with other delegates in their committees.”

Among the standout performers were Angel Amabisco, Autumn Reid, and Jasmine Recinos, who were recognized with Position Paper awards. Amabisco, a double major in government and Spanish, was commended for his paper presented to the UN High Commissioner on Refugees. Reid, a finance major, and Recinos, a master’s degree student in government, contributed significantly to the debates within the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Liam Mitchell, the president of the NMSU Model UN team, was also acknowledged with a Peer Delegate Award for his exemplary work and diplomacy in the United Nations Environment Assembly during the conference. Mitchell shared his thoughts on the experience, saying, “Every time I've had the privilege to attend a conference with the team, I've had the opportunity to learn more about what it takes to be a leader and how to think critically about addressing difficult issues.”

Reflecting on the team's success, Mitchell emphasized the collective effort behind their achievements, stating, “It's a reflection of the hard work of each and every individual on the NMSU Model UN team, and I want to give all the praise to each and every delegate.”

The consistent success of NMSU’s Model UN team over the years can be attributed to their outstanding leadership, advising, and dedication to the Model UN, which has led to various top awards since the 1990s.

In conclusion, the NMSU Model United Nations team's remarkable performance at the 2024 conference underscores their commitment to excellence and diplomacy in international relations.
