Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS) is set to host its inaugural State of the District Address on Wednesday, May 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event aims to provide an overview of district goals and objectives across all departments.

Ignacio Ruiz, LCPS Superintendent, will share information related to student proficiency rates, budget data, and strategic planning as the district prepares for the 2024-2025 school year.

The district has invited Dr. Richard Carranza, former Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, as the keynote speaker. Carranza is recognized nationally for his stance on significant issues facing school districts and boasts an educational career spanning over thirty years.

The two-hour event will be livestreamed and feature speeches from students and alumni. Among them is Jamila Gilbert, Senior Manager of Internal Communication for Virgin Galactic and a graduate of Las Cruces High School and New Mexico State University. Gilbert made history as one of only sixteen Hispanic and LatinX individuals to travel to space.

R.J. Scott, a member of Organ Mountain High School's graduating Class of 2024 who was selected to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis with plans to become a pilot, is also scheduled to speak.

The 2024 LCPS State of the District event is open to invited local dignitaries and district administration but will be livestreamed to the public courtesy of LCPS.TV at www.lcps.net with live Spanish translation available.
