At Highland Elementary, every morning brings a meaningful tradition led by retired Army veteran and Lead Custodian Mark Mirabal. With the assistance of the school's student council, Mirabal orchestrates a flag-raising ceremony, delivering lessons on the significance of the American flag.
Mirabal's teachings include the meanings behind the flag’s colors: red signifying valor and bravery, white representing purity and innocence, and blue symbolizing justice and perseverance. He stresses the importance of flag protocols, such as ensuring the flag never touches the ground and maintaining the correct height. Students learn to fold the flag and understand why it must be lowered at sunset or flown at half-staff on specific occasions, like Memorial Day, to honor the fallen.
“The flag is more than just a piece of cloth," Mirabal emphasizes. "It represents the many men and women who’ve dedicated their lives to this country, and it's important to honor them by properly displaying it each day.”
For both Mirabal and the students, the flag is a symbol of unity, freedom, and resilience. It embodies the ideals of democracy and justice, reminding them of the continuous struggle for equality and the protection of rights and freedoms. The flag symbolizes the sacrifices of soldiers and everyday citizens who reinforce the values of liberty and justice.
Student council leaders Deborah Mirabal and Andrea Ruiz note that the ceremony educates student council members on the history and symbolism of the flag while fostering responsibility, teamwork, and respect for national symbols. This tradition instills a sense of patriotism and appreciation for military sacrifices, leaving a lasting impact on students as they mature into informed citizens.
"We are so grateful to Mark for helping us teach our students valuable lessons in working together for a shared purpose," said Deborah Mirabal. “This experience strengthens the students' connection to our school and honors the traditions that have shaped our nation’s history.”
