New Mexico State University has appointed Rick Marlatt as the new associate dean of the Graduate School, effective July 1.
“I am honored to join the Graduate School at New Mexico State University and am tremendously excited to contribute to the vision of empowering graduate students to succeed throughout their academic endeavors and beyond,” Marlatt stated.
Marlatt, who joined NMSU in 2017, previously served as director of the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration, and Leadership (TPAL) within the College of Health, Education, and Social Transformation. His expertise spans teacher education, creative writing, digital literacies, literature study, and sociocultural theory.
“I am delighted Dr. Marlatt has joined the Graduate School. Dr. Marlatt brings institutional knowledge and evidence-based practice to drive innovation and excellence in graduate education,” said Ranjit Koodali, dean of the Graduate School and associate provost for International Affairs.
James McAteer, senior associate provost who chaired the search committee, remarked: “His leadership in TPAL during a time of change was noted by many, and we now look forward to seeing Dr. Marlatt excel in his new role.”
Marlatt holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Riverside and a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His recent publications include work in English Education, Research in the Teaching of English, English Journal, English Teaching: Practice & Critique, Journal of Education, Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, and Action in Teacher Education.
His latest co-edited book is "Teaching for Equity, Justice, and Antiracism with Digital Literacy Practices," published in 2024. His previous co-edited book "Esports Research and its Integration in Education" was released in 2021. Additionally, he authored three poetry collections: "November Father," "Desired Altitude," winner of the Standing Rock Cultural Arts Poetry Award; and "How We Fall Apart," winner of the Seven Circle Press Poetry Award.
At NMSU Marlatt has focused on generating access and excellence in educator preparation while amplifying diverse research epistemologies. He aims to further contribute to the Graduate School’s mission by providing transformative graduate education opportunities. Throughout his career he has been involved with sponsored projects totaling over $19 million including paid teacher residencies recruitment retention Native American educators development culturally linguistically responsive curricula other areas.
