The New Mexico State University Fire Department has released a set of guidelines to ensure safety during the holiday season, particularly focusing on the use of portable heaters and electrical cords. With an increase in electrical usage due to space heaters and holiday decorations, the department emphasizes adhering to safety measures.

Portable heaters are permissible on campus if they comply with the Fire Prevention Guidelines. "No portable propane heaters are allowed on campus," is one of the key stipulations. The heater must be ETL Certified, UL or FM-tested, include a tip-over switch for automatic shut-off if knocked over, and be in good repair with a sufficiently long cord to reach outlets without using extension cords. The practice known as daisy chaining, which involves connecting multiple extension cords or power strips together, is strongly discouraged due to its potential to overload circuits and cause fires.

Heaters should not be placed within three feet of combustible materials and must be unplugged at the end of each workday or when buildings will remain unattended for extended periods.

NMSU advises consulting vendors or reviewing manufacturers' recommendations before purchasing a heater. Understanding specific safety concerns related to different models is crucial.

Regarding holiday decorations, individuals are urged to inspect lights for loose connections or exposed wires prior to installation and address any issues immediately. Cords should not obstruct walkways where they pose tripping hazards. Additionally, no more than three strings of lights should be connected together at once.

When dismantling decorations after the holidays, checking for wear and tear on electrical cords is advised so that replacements can be made as necessary in preparation for future use.

For more information on fire safety practices, NMSU’s Fire Department alongside NMSU’s Department of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management offers additional resources.

"Stay warm and be safe!" encourages NMSU as parting advice during this festive yet potentially hazardous time of year.
