Las Cruces Public Schools schedules virtual and Spanish meetings for redistricting feedback

An additional meeting has been scheduled for the Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS) redistricting initiative ahead of a potential vote by the LCPS Board of Education on December 17. The district's redistricting plan, launched in August, aims to balance student populations for the upcoming school year. Initially, three public input meetings were planned to collect feedback, and now a virtual meeting is set for December 4 at 6:30 p.m.

The proposed changes align with the opening of Columbia Elementary School and aim to address school population balance and overcrowding in East Mesa schools. The plan may also enhance enrollment at Mayfield High School. Any changes to attendance zones require approval from the LCPS Board of Education.

LCPS has initiated a public survey to gather community input on the redistricting plan, available in English and Spanish until December 10. An extra meeting was added to provide stakeholders with another chance to understand their options before completing the survey.

The first town hall meeting took place at Organ Mountain High School on November 14, followed by another at Mayfield High School on November 20. Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz will host a third meeting in Spanish on December 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the boardroom at Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Administration Complex.

Sherley O’Brien, Chief of Student Services and Community Relations, leads the redistricting effort. In August, she organized a Redistricting Advisory Committee composed of community volunteers representing students, parents, teachers from all four LCPS feeder patterns, school board members, and district administrators. Updates have been communicated via the committee’s website on the district’s homepage.

Policy JCAA outlines the redistricting process and grants authority to alter geographic attendance zones based on new school openings or population shifts.

Permanent school zone changes could be voted on during the LCPS Board of Education's regular meeting on December 17. According to O’Brien, feedback from various sources will be presented then.
